Anti-Stadium Violence Measure Passes Assembly

Authored by Assembly Rep. Mike Gatto, the bill would require California major league teams to post contact numbers for stadium security.

Assembly Bill 2464, the Improving Personal Safety at Stadiums Act, passed the Assembly, Thursday, by a unanimous 71-0 vote. Authored by representative Mike Gatto, incumbent for the 43rd Assembly District which includes La Cañada as part of the new redistricting, the bill was inspired by increased fan violence at pro stadiums, including the Bryan Stow beating last March at Dodger Stadium. The bill requires major league stadiums in California to post numbers for calls or texts to contact stadium security about fan violence. The signs must be visible from the stands and in parking lots.  In a press release Gatto says it is security--not police--who is best poised to put down violent incidents, since security is inside the stadium. St. Francis Rides Strong into State Championship

The Golden Knights head to Los Olivos to finish off the season and compete against high school teams from the NorCal league at the State Championships on Sunday.

The following article was written by St. Francis High School Cycling Coach Lee Bird. The St. Francis High School mountain bike team competed in the fifth and final regular season event of the SoCal league series at Lake Arrowhead, CA earlier this month. The race was crucial for overall season awards and the “thin-air” of the mountains tested all of the riders. Once again, the Golden Knights rose to the challenge and finished strong in this race, and overall for the season. The Lake Arrowhead course turned out to be very dry and dusty, unlike the muddy course that the riders faced last year. Besides the altitude and dust, the riders faced a tough 1.2 mile long fire road climb at the end of each 6-mile lap. This climb tested the resolve and …

Softball: La Cañada Earns Top Seed in CIF Playoffs

The Rio Hondo League champs won Southern Section Division 5 championship last year.

The La Canada High School softball team has the top seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs, but coach KC Mathews doesn’t like to talk too much about it. La Canada wrapped up the Rio Hondo League championship last week with a 7-0 win over Temple City. The Spartans won five games in a row to cap off the season outscoring opponents, 33-1, over that stretch. The Spartans (21-4-1) will have to wait for the winner of the wild-card game between Lompoc and Gladstone to know who their first-round opponent is. Once playoffs start, Mathews said his girls are focused on the end of the playoffs, not where they are ranked at the start of the playoffs. “It’s not something that we focus on,” Mathews said. “It’s nice. The rankings the first …

La Canada Swimmers Ready for CIF Championships

Katy Campbell, a U.S. Olympic qualifier, leads a strong team to Riverside City College.

La Canada’s Katy Campbell already holds two school records in swimming. She’ll be looking to add a couple CIF Southern Section championships to her swimming resume this weekend. Campbell leads a strong contingent from La Canada High School in the CIF Southern Section Division I swim finals at Riverside City College starting Thursday. She is the sixth-seeded swimmer in the 200 freestyle and has also qualified for the 500 freestyle. But she has bigger plans than the CIF swim finals. She is headed to the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha, Neb., in June and will compete in two events, the 400 freestyle and the 800 freestyle. She and her club coach adjusted her training schedule to prepare for the Olympic Trials. She might not be at her fastest…

LCHS Students Rescue Bleeding Classmate

Bijan Rahimi and Grant Owen applied emergency procedures to a volleyball student who shredded a tendon and exposed bone after a "freak accident'' in the school gym.

This was not a drill. This was a fellow student with blood spurting from his artery - and he needed help.  So two La Cañada High School students in the sports medicine class did just that: Bijan Rahimi and Grant Owen ran to the aid of a volleyball player injured in a "freak accident'' during an April practice at the high school gym. The Bijan Rahimi and Grant Owen applied emergency procedures and ultimately stopped an awful situation from becoming worse. "We’re incredibly proud of them; the skills, the bravery, the cool collectedness is remarkable,'' La Cañada Unified School District Superintendent Wendy Sinnette said Tuesday during the regular school board meeting.  Teacher Melanie Harrick is a licensed physical therapist who along with …

Softball: Spartans Win Rio Hondo Championship!

Lauren Cox and Alyssa Stolmack combine on a 7-0 no-hitter against Temple City.

La Canada High School pitchers Lauren Cox and Alyssa Stolmack combined on a no-hitter against Temple City and won the Rio Hondo League championship at Temple City High School on Monday. Catcher Catherine Horner hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning in a 7-0 win. Stolmack added a solo shot in the seventh inning. Cox started the game for La Canada and went five innings. She walked one batter and struck out four without giving up a hit. "It’s extremely hard to beat this team when Lauren’s pitching," Horner said. "She is on every single game. She always hits her spots and never gives up more than zero to two hits a game." Stolmack relieved Cox in the sixth inning and pitched two perfect inning to complete the no-hitter. La Canada (19-4-1…
