The super moon will appear as much as 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of 2012.
The full moon is often associated with the rising of tides, howling of werewolves and other mythological lore. Even the term lunatic comes from lunar. Those who fear the inlfuence of the moon may want to lock their doors or not venture too far outside Saturday night because the Moon will appear to be 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of 2012, according to NASA. Commonly called the “super moon,” the phenomenon is known to scientists as the “perigee moon.” The term comes from the elliptical path the moon follows around the Earth and reaches perigee, which is the point closest to the Earth’s center during the orbit. The moon will be about 31,000 miles closer to Earth's orbit than the furthest point of its …

A strange and unexpected sadness sweeps over me at the news that Davy Jones died.
Editor's Note: Jim Caroompas is the editor for Martinez Patch. Wednesday's column was so touching, I couldn't help but share it with my La Cañada folks! Davy Jones of the Monkees died today. That news is very sad for me. Even though the band represented everything that was and is reprehensible about the music industry, they were an important and cherished part of my life. In 1966, I was living with my mom in Concord. I was 12 and really hating the bullies in my school, who seemed to seek me out on a daily basis for verbal and physical reminders of how thin and dorky I was. My mom was, unknown to me, recovering emotionally from the birth of her daughter, whom she gave up immediately for adoption two years before. This made her kind of …

Family, friends, community members and Los Angeles Police Department officers celebrated Drew Ferraro's life at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Tujunga on Wednesday.
Rain poured outside Our Lady of Lourdes Church as hundreds of people gathered to remember Drew Ferraro, a Crescenta Valley High School student, who killed himself by jumping off a building at the school during lunchtime. He was 15. Family members wore black Converse shoes, a favorite for Drew. The Pastor Rev. Freddie Chua led the Wednesday morning homily before Drew's family, classmates, school teachers and Los Angeles Police Department officers--who came in support of Drew's father, John, who is an LAPD officer. Chua recalled the family's memories of Drew, including how his love of adventure often led to trips to the hospital, or cuts, bruises and staples. Chua told of the time Drew wrapped himself naked in bubble wrap and ran into …
