Founded in 1949, La Cañada Pre-School touts itself as the oldest pre-school in the city. Director Debbie Bacino, an early childhood educator for 20 years, focuses on children's self discovery and hones their senses of wonder.

The pre-kindergarten program is designed to ready children for kindergarten in the upcoming year. Teachers and staff prepare the the children for both the academic work as well as the various social aspects of kindergarten.

In the Pre-K, there are four teachers for 24 students, creating low ratios as well as an individualized education.

The pre-school's morning program is developmentally based, with an emphasis on learning through experiences with art, music and literature, as well as social interaction. The children follow a morning schedule similar to that of progressive college lab schools, such as UC Berkley and the Harvard School of early Childhood Education, where children have a mixed-age and mixed-teacher environment.

For the first hour they are in school, all 34 students are together for an hour of free play outside. There are six teachers present. From there, teachers and staff move the children inside where they are divided into three separate groups according to their age and developmental needs.
