CIF-SS Spring Coaches' Polls Through March 28

For the first time this spring, a local squad has crept in to the top 10 in the baseball rankings. The CIF-Southern Section released its most recent spring sports polls Monday, and Cresecnta Valley checks in at No. 9 in Division 2.

But this early in the season, rankings are the last thing on Falcons coach Phil Torres' mind.

"That's just something for CIF to put out," he said. "It doesn't affect what we're going to do."

Torres said he's more interested in seeing how his team perfoms over the next two weeks, when the Falcons play nine games in 13 days.

The Falcons have three Pacific League games this week, starting with a makeup game against Hoover on Monday. Then the Falcons play Santa Monica at Stengel Field in Glendale on Saturday in the first game of the Babe Herman Tournament.

In its 6-1 start that includes a doubleheader sweep over Monrovia, Crescenta Valley have been led by its pitching staff, which Torres calls the strength of his team.

The Falcons have recorded three shutouts this year and have allowed only eight runs in seven games.

Junior left-hander Elliott Surrey (second team All-CIF last year) is 2-0 and is joined in the rotation by Kyle Murray and Troy Mulcahey.

"Troy Mulcahey, he's pitched really well and has three home runs and has done a good job," Torres said. "We have been pleased with everybody."

The Crescenta Valley softball team also entered the polls for the first time this week, as the Falcons are now No. 9 in Division 3. The La Canada softball team remains ranked No. 2 in Division 5.
