Water Polo: Flintridge Prep Blasts Past Arcadia

Rebels gets eight goals from Diego Delgado in 13-5 nonleague boys' water polo win over Apaches.

Arcadia High may have an enrollment nearly 10 times the size of that at , but Wednseday afternoon it was the Rebels who made their play in the pool do the talking in a 13-5 nonleague boys' water polo win over the visiting Apaches.

But those numbers didn’t play any factor into the nonleague water polo match the two contested Wednesday at Flintridge Prep.

Even with the numbers stacked against them, the Rebels earned a 13-5 victory over the Apaches.

“We see teams that are bigger and have eight more guys than we do,” Flintridge Prep coach Daniel Hare said. “We just say we will compete. When people get out of the pool, people will know Flintridge Prep came to play.”

The Rebels (9-5) never trailed in the match and Arcadia was never on level terms after one of freshman Diego Delgado’s eight goals in the first quarter that made it 3-2.

“They have a lot to work on and I think we can learn from the other team because they played very well,” Arcadia coach Nicole Comacho said of her team.

Flintridge Prep got two big breaks at the end of the first and second quarters.

Ethan Vandeventer scored a long-range shot to beat the buzzer ending the first period. That gave the Rebels a 4-2 lead.

Delgado beat the buzzer and Arcadia goalie Spencer Norconk to end the first half, giving the Rebels a 6-4 halftime advantage.

“I truthfully just saw the clock and shot it so we’d have a chance at scoring and it went in,” Delgado said.

Arcadia (2-2) got an early second-half goal from Clifford Ly to make it 6-5. But from then on it was all Rebels.

Delgado scored four goals in each half.

“He’s had some incredible experience at the club level,” Hare said of Delgado. “(I’m impressed with) the knowledge of the game and his motor is always running. He recognizes there is five seconds left on the shot clock and it’s a back hand.”

Vandeventer had two goals for the Rebels. Alex Blaine, Carlo Sivilotti and Kellan Rohde each had a goal.

Arcadia got goals from Connor Bodenshot, Anthony Kuo, Kevin Fry and Steven Heer.
