LCUSD School Board Candidates Remain Quiet on Leko Complaint

The four school board candidates met at La Cañada High School on Monday evening for a public forum.

against one of her math students didn’t cause much of a stir in Monday night's candidate forum at . Instead, talk of collaboration days and slipping enrollment due to private schools dominated much of the forum's discussion in a packed room of about 100 community members.

"All I know about the situation is what I’ve read in the paper,” said Ernest Koeppen of the Leko complaint. “It would be unfair to comment.”

Newcomer Ellen Multari said that the incident should be left to those involved, but added, “If found to be true, it’s egregious.”

Andrew Blumenfeld disagreed with how the complaint was handled. Since the complaint was filed in June, Blumenfeld said the district shouldn’t have postponed its procedure until it resumed in the fall after summer recesses. The LCHS alum and current junior at Princeton University believes that procedure should occur promptly after a complaint is filed in order to proactively address future issues.

Incumbent Jeanne Broberg noted that the complaint was filed in June and that the district was following procedure.

In addition to the Leko complaint, the candidates also discussed the district’s declining enrollment, out-of-district permit students, parcel tax and four collaboration days. Patch will soon post more in-depth coverage of the forum and candidate's discussion.
