La Cañada High Honors its Best and Brightest

At a recent ceremony, more than 350 high school seniors received scholarships and awards, including a $300,000 full-ride to the United States Naval Academy.

recently commemorated more than 350 seniors  at the . Such awards recognized hard work and dedication within the classroom, as well as leadership and integrity involved in numerous community service and extracurricular events. 

“This event held annually is here to commemorate the success that these seniors have displayed during their time at La Cañada High,” counselor Sally Spangler said. “Each one of these seniors has played an intricate part of helping out in the community, participating in numerous programs, and members of the faculty want these students to be recognized for their efforts.”

While a large number of students did receive some type of award from teachers and faculty, many also received scholarships. During the awards ceremony, nearly a third of the graduating class of 2011 received an award of at least $100 to be used for paying for college. One student, though, stood out from all the rest: Matt Faber received the Rhodes Scholarship from the United States Naval Academy.

The award consists of full four-year tuition at the university, along with a small monthly stipend, with the total amount surpassing $300,000.    

“Matt truly displays that he is the best of the best,” Naval Captain Kirkeby said. “He is an outstanding athlete and an outstanding scholar. It is truly an honor that a man like him can represent the Naval Academy in such a high caliber.”
