High School Students Learn, Serve, Lead at Local Programs

Here are a couple of upcoming learning, service and leadership programs at the Crescenta-Canada YMCA.

If you have a teenager who doesn’t dig sports but has plenty to say then it might be a good idea to check out the Crescenta-Canada YMCA’s teen leadership programs.

Several programs beginning in September are spearheaded by youth and teen program coordinators Jennipher Malagon and Cameron Singleton, including , PILOTs and Jr. High Efex. 

CALIFORNIA YMCA YOUTH & GOVERNMENT

California YMCA Youth and Government is a model legislature and court system program for California high school students. and  students learn about the bill-making process away from a school desk, inside Sacramento's assembly, senate and court chambers.

Returning members will meet on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Crescenta-Canada YMCA multi-purpose room. New member night for both the Crescenta-Canada YMCA and Verdugo Hills YMCA delegations will be Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Crescenta-Canada YMCA multi-purpose room.

PILOTs

A leadership program at its root, PILOTs was launched to offer service opportunities for local high school students, helping kids meet the required service hours for schools. The group, which stands for progressive individual leadership of teens, has canned food drives, volunteers at local events, packs sack lunches for the homeless and meets with area seniors.

Sign ups are on Monday and meetings start on Thursday, Sept. 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Crescenta-Canada YMCA.

JR. HIGH EFEX

There’s one program for junior high kids that makes sure your junior high kid has a blast. Jr. High Efex, which stands for everything fun, everything extreme, hosts scavenger hunts, games and plenty of time to meet friends and counselors.

The Jr. High BBQ Kick-Off is Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Crescenta-Canada YMCA multi-purpose room.
