Football: Spartans Kick off Rio Hondo League against Monrovia

The Rio Hondo League opener Thursday night features the Wildcats taking on La Cañada at home - though neither team starts the 2011 season with impressive stats.

Coming off a three-game losing streak, the spartans will try to kick start their team's mojo Thursday night, as the varsity football team takes on Monrovia at home.

The Rio Hondo League opener pits the 1-4 Spartans against Monrovia High School's 2-3 Wildcats. Last week, the Spartans blew a 21-7 lead against Arroyo, before losing 23-21. Here's how the two teams' stats stack up, according to MaxPreps.com.

Earlier this season, and in addition to losing to Crescenta Valley 35-14 on Sept. 23, the Spartans also lost quarterback Matt Jones. Jones sustained an injury during the game and has been on the bench ever since. Replacement quarterback Grant Owen has completed eight of 27 passes for 51 yards, according to the .
