LCF Locals to Congress: 'Do the Right Thing' (Video)

Congressional Republicans and Democrats finally reached a tentative deal Sunday to reduce spending and borrow more money to pay the obligations of the American government before the Aug. 2 deadline. People had plenty to say on the issue.

Members of Congress have been battling for months over the need to increase the nation’s debt ceiling. According to a recent announcement by the president Sunday night, it appears congressional factions of Tea Party loyalists, Progressive Democrats plus centrist Republicans and Democrats and have a deal the president will sign.

A jaunt around La Cañada Flintridge on Sunday showed that local folks had plenty of opinions on the matter.

The government needs to borrow money each month to pay its expenses the same way an individual uses a credit card to cover his or her expenses if they don’t earn enough to live on a cash only basis.

According to government estimates, if Congress and the president cannot pass legislation allowing an increase in the debt limit by Aug. 2, the U.S. will run out of funds to cover its bills. This would affect Social Security recipients, programs that help the poor including nutrition programs, active duty military pay, federal employee pay and most other government expenses.
