Nixle is a tool that the uses to keep residents alert to critical information as it happens.
Captain David Silversparre stresses the importance of signing up, saying that Nixle is a great way to "receive information about major traffic incidents and special alerts for the area."
"In that system, you can monitor the area in which you reside, and also the area of a loved one who is away at college or an elderly relative," he said.
Nixle is free, and users can customize their experience so they only receive information about neighborhoods of their choice. Alerts are sent via e-mail or text.
Nixle alerts have been issued regarding power outages, closures of the 210 Freeway, traffic accidents and other emergency alerts.
