Photos: Brush Fire Chars 1 Acre, Jeep

The afternoon fire, just down the street from Crescenta Valley High School, backed up traffic on the westbound side of the 210 Freeway.

The only casualty of Tuesday afternoon's brush fire along the 210 Freeway was a Jeep parked in the 3000 block of Encinal Avenue, authorities said.

Mario De Fina, battalion chief for Los Angeles County in La Cañada, said some 75 personnel and a dump from a water dropping helicopter fought Tuesday afternoon's fire, which scorched one acre along the freeway. Authorities referred to the blaze as a "road-side start-up,'' which means it could have been started by a discarded cigarette or engine spark from the freeway.

"This kind of fire is very common,'' De Fina said, noting the fire was not deemed to be suspicious.

The brush ignited on the westbound side of the 210 Freeway, east of Pennsylvania Avenue in La Crescenta, just before 1 p.m. Firefighters extinguished the blaze about an hour later.

Firefighters who responded to the road-side startup came from Glendale, Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County fire departments.
