Updated: Valentine Care Project Extended Until 9 p.m.

Updated: Volunteers have been cutting paper hearts and collecting community cards since 10 a.m. Monday, hoping to hit the magic number 3,200 - so each Crescenta Valley High student will have his or her own Valentine Tuesday.

As of late afternoon, they've received almost half of that, said co-organizer Amy Jahnke.

"I'm sending a new crew down and we'll have a table out here until 9 p.m.,'' she said, noting lots of people expressed interest in the project, but work precluded them from getting there.

Now's your chance: the tables are filled with pre-made heart-shaped or decorated cards, or there's a pile of colored card stock, glue sticks, crayons and scissors if you're feeling extra artsy. 

Earlier: A massive Valentine campaign has been underway Monday to create and collect Valentine cards for the Crescenta Valley High School campus, still reeling from Friday's death of sophomore Drew Ferraro.

The Facebook page for Nurtured Mama Resources, Doula & Postpartum Care posted the event Have a Heart: Contagious Love for Crescenta Valley High School.

According to the La Cañada Valley Sun, Rosemont Middle School Principal Cynthia Livingston asked the public to create a Valentine's card with the phrase "I CARE.'' Folks should write their names, ages, cities of residence and how long they've been there. 

The effort follows the apparent suicide Friday of Ferraro, a 15-year-old boy who authorities say jumped off a third-story classroom building on campus. The incident happened at the beginning of lunch, in front of several students. District officials have said they had no indication that Ferraro had been the victim of bullying, but fellow classmates and parents said that the boy was bullied. 

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating.

At Rosemont Elementary on Monday, parents, students and community members were invited to craft a card, just in time for Valentine's Day Tuesday, when CVHS students return. School was closed Monday. Cards may be dropped off at the La Crescenta Ralphs.

Have a Heart. Show YOU and your family CARE about the Crescenta Valley... it costs nothing- just a little effort and time. Sit down... ask every member of your family to participate. There has ALWAYS been something special about the Crescenta Valley... that's why SO many of us grew up here, raise kids here AND have lived here for 30+ years! 

Life is precious and at times complicated. Although we don't have all the answers we have a CHOICE in how we respond... not just with fear, blame & anger (although those are normal emotions in times of tragedy and trauma). 

If you know HOPE, even in the midst of difficulty, we can CHOOSE LOVE. 

Create a Valentine's Card: 
Say "I CARE" and sign your name, age, city and how long you've lived here!

The vision is that these will be collected, sorted & ready for distribution on Valentine's Day when CV High School re-opens... can you picture ALL 3,200 students and administration getting a card of encouragement that shows we as a community CARE when they return to campus on Tuesday, February 14.

**Come to Rosemont Elementary School on Monday, February 13 from 3-5pm: bring cards, friends to make cards and a willingness to help organize the cards for CVHS to have when they arrive Tuesday morning.

Understandably... the administration at CVHS is asking the community NOT to congregate on Tuesday morning...due to traffic, media and sensitivity to students.
