College Advising: Your Best College Deal!

If you are deciding on your future college with finances in mind, this blog is for you. So often, students are left wondering which package they should accept—the one in Pennsylvania, or the one in California?  The one at the religious school, or the non-secular school? The cheap school or the expensive one? If you are a student who “needs money,” please consider the following priorities before signing anything:

1.    The best school.  The best school for you will be the one that allows you to take the classes you want, make great friends, and professors who will help you find your future job. This may not be a big name school, but it should be a school with great connections.

2.    A school with connections. To find out if your future academic home will pay you back for any money you might have to borrow, call Admissions and ask them why you should choose their school.  Next, call the academic department for your future major. Ask, “What are the graduates in your department doing now?”  and “Do you help students get paid internships?”  Jobs and paid internships are the reason for college. A job is what you’re after and internships help build your resume, which will lead to a better job after graduation.

3.    Financial Aid offers.  Call the Financial Aid office at your future school choices and gently point out that you’re trying to decide between School A and School B. If there is a price difference, maybe School B will offer you a bit more money.  Sweet!  This is also a good time to go over the loan vs. grant package.  Make sure that your offer is good for all four years.

4.    The Gap. Oh, the dreaded “gap.”  The gap refers to the difference between what financial aid is offering you and what the real price of your education will be. Sometimes the numbers don’t add up.  If they don't, call the Financial Aid office and ask “Why not?”

5.    The Price of Coming Home.  While the Midwest is offering sweeter and sweeter deals (as the winters get colder there), think about airfare. If your financial aid is generous enough, the airfare won’t matter. If not, think again. You might also consider staying at school for Thanksgiving and Spring break. This is a big adventure, so say consider your Midwest college very seriously.

Your future college really wants you to say “yes” to them. Make sure that when you do, you know what you’re buying—a great job, a little debt, wonderful friends, and professors who will care and will help you achieve your dream.
