A total of $44,000 was presented to two local charities Tuesday night from two board members of the La Canada Junior Womens Club (LCJWC).
President-elect Carole Swemline gave Cathy Clement from Five Acres $22,000. Fellow (LCJWC) member, Michelle Sabourin, gave Vicky Garcia and Elizabeth Devers from the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House a check for $22,000.
“The amount our club raised this year surpassed our goal,” stated Swemline at the May meeting held at The .
Founded in 1969, LCJWC is a non-profit organization that supports women and children in need. Members provide hands-on projects and financial support to local non-profit charities. For the past two years, members have been involved in helping Five Acres, a service agency that has helped vulnerable children and families since 1888. At the Altadena campus, LCJWC provided birthday parties to the children living in onsite cottages. They hosted a basketball clinic, helped the children with art projects and supported the annual art show. During Christmas, many of the members were secret Santa’s for the children living at Five Acres.
The Ronald McDonald House is a “home away from home” for families from all over the world seeking medical treatment for their critically injured or ill child. These families are seeking advanced medical treatment at Huntington Hospital in the Pasadena and surrounding hospitals in Los Angeles. Statistics show that patients heal quicker and are more comfortable in the hospital environment if a loved one is by their side. The Ronald McDonald House provides housing and loving support for these families.
LCJWC renovated many of the main room and bedrooms inside both of the Ronald McDonald Houses. Members provided meals during the holidays, hosted Halloween parties, purchased needed supplies and participated in family picnics.
LCJWC provides 50 sack lunches to needy women and children at Union Station with their monthly “Meals on Heels” program. They also provide free eye screening tests for local preschool children.
LCJWC offers women in the community friendship, fun and philanthropy. Membership is open in the Fall. Go to: http://www.lcjwc.org/how_to_join to inquire about membership.
