SFHS Named National Sports Medicine Champion

St. Francis High School earned the top spot in the small schools division of the 2nd Annual National High School Sports Medicine Championships, the American Academic Competition Institute (AACI) announced Thursday.

AACI developed the online National High School Sports Medicine Championships to help test and celebrate high school students’ Sports Medicine/Athletic Training knowledge. AACI’s goal is to give students from across the nation an opportunity to excel in their chosen areas of study through online competition and testing.

St. Francis is one of 28 high schools from across seven states that competed in this year’s national championships, school spokesman Andrew Burghdorf said Friday. The Golden Knights earned the title of National Champion of the Alert Services (Small Schools) Division for the second year in a row. This result also placed St. Francis in fifth place overall amongst schools from all divisions, he said.

Additionally, 10 St. Francis students, including six juniors, also achieved All-American status by placing in the top 25 of the division. These students are: Brett Homer, Patrick McGoldrick, Alec Hagen, Jared Sharfstein, Scott Marshall, Joseph Sarni, Sean Garcia, Sean Bird, Ryan Veiga and Kevin Baker.

St. Francis qualified for the national championships earlier in the semester and 15 students tested on May 20. Topics covered included first aid and CPR, emergency procedures, physiology, medical terminology and legal issues.
