School Board Releases New Statement Regarding Leko

In a closed session today, the school board unanimously agreed to pursue the option of a settlement with Leko which would result in her "separation from the District."

Offering no public comment, the La Canada Unified School District board convened at its meeting Monday morning and announced that no formal action will be taken against math teacher Gabrielle Leko "at this time."

Former school board member Cindy Wilcox, who brought the original complaint against Leko to the board, as well parent Debra Archuleta were among the handful of audience members present, which inlcuding a LCHS student.

LCHS Science Department Chair Patty Compeau sat in the back of the board room thorughout the meeting and noted she was present out of concern and support for Leko.

Leko has been , which has caused a storm of reaction among parents and other students.

In a released statement, the board did note its unanimous decision to direct counsel to pursue the option of a settlement agreement with Leko that would result in her "separation from the District."

The board today released the following statement:

The Board has taken no formal action in closed session.


However, the Board retains all options with regard to further disciplinary action inclusive of initiating dismissal proceedings. In the interim, the Board has unanimously directed counsel to pursue the option of a settlement agreement with employee #01-11-12 that would result in the employee’s separation from the District.


In connection therewith, the Board has directed the Superintendent to maintain the current classroom arrangement of said employee until the date of any separation and, regardless of the outcome of the settlement negotiation, all current students of said employee will be given the option to maintain enrollment in their current class or be offered an alternative equivalent placement effective at the start of the second semester.
