Patch Picks: Places to Park It

Patch found five great parks perfect for escaping the heat, hiding in the shade, or even lounging in the sun if that's your style.

La Cañada boasts a variety of neighborhood parks, from large to small and wild to tamed. Whether you need a shady grove for strolling or a lawn big enough to host an impromptu soccer match, parks in town fit the bill.

Of course , located in the heart of town, is a favorite for weekend games and picnics, but it can be a great place to take a time-out any day of the week. There's plenty of space for kids to run around. On Sundays nights during the summer the park hosts free concerts from 7 to 9 p.m. This weekend's line up presents A Tribute to Elvis by Steve Roth. Bring blankets, chairs, and a picnic!

Take a hike at Hahamongna Watershed Park . Divided into two recreation areas on the La Cañada side of the park across from LCHS on Oak Grove Drive, the Upper Oak Grove area has picnic tables and facilities while the Lower Oak Grove sports a large playing field. Stroll among the trees and take in the views instead of sitting at home - even when it's hot there's plenty of shade.

La Cañada’s newest city park, the Mayor’s Discovery Park, offers visitors a grass lawn for mellow games, restrooms, free parking, and picnic areas. For hot days, there's a fun water feature in the kid's area that can keep little ones cool and refresh adults willing to be splashed.

Two quarter-acres parks offer sweet spots to sneak a longer lunch break or decompress for a moment. Oberlz Park, named for the founder of Sports Chalet, sits right in the middle of the Town Center shopping area, yet still offers a lovely view of the mountains. Glenola Park, at Vista de Valle Road and the Angeles Crest Highway, provides a gazebo, manicured path, and lovely rose bushes.
