Patch Picks: Five Who Give

Patch found five great people who find ways to serve the community and inspire others to do the same.

1. Recent graduate received a Caruso Affiliated Spirit of American Youth Scholarship recognizing outstanding community service and leadership. The award honors young people who have shown an extraordinary commitment to improving their communities as well as academic excellence. Mailes is known for her activism regarding safety of the Angeles Crest Highway, is active in Girl Scouts, and has also serves as a youth leader at the . She will attend UC Berkeley this fall.

2. Charlie Kamar of the has for years donated one cent of every gallon of gas sold on the 15th of each month to LCF schools. Over the years his penny-per-gallon campaign has raised over $1,000 annually for the and inspired the creation of the Foundation on the 15th merchant program.

3. The honored business owner and philanthropist this year for her outstanding work in the community. Stranger leads the program, which invites local businesses to donate a percentage of their sales to the La Cañada-Flintridge Educational Foundation.

4. pastor Gary Dennis leads a congregation that leads in community service. The church’s outreach stretches from parenting classes to meals for the homeless. In May, the church partnered with the non-profit organization for a clothing drive that brings business attire to those in need of interview and work clothes.

5. Only seven years old, won the first-ever Gavin Award from the Glendale Adventist Medical Center, an honor named after him. Dinger suffered a stroke while in the womb and still receives therapy at the medical center. Dinger raised $15,000 over three years to fund stroke services and bring awareness to stroke. Dinger also participated in the Glendale News Press Downtown Dash, a 5K run/walk for stroke awareness and funding, brining in over $5,000 in sponsorship.
