Patch Picks: Five Great Places for Ethnic Eats

Add some pizzazz to your lunch break or dinner with flavors from beyond the neighborhood in the neighborhood.

LCF resident Toi Vanasin has been cooking and serving Thai food at since 1977, keeping track of her customer’s like, dislikes, and lives outside her dining room.  Vanasin’s favorite dish, sizzling beef, is also a top choice for many regulars, but the young coconut delight, a shrimp curry served in a whole coconut, is also sure to please.  Open Tuesday to Dunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Closed Monday. 1040 Foothill Blvd. 818-790-6074.

Family-owned serves a traditional Persian meal in an elegant dining room with gracious service. Fesenjoon, a chicken stew with pomegranates and walnuts served with saffron basmati rice, is perfect for lunch or dinner, especially when followed by a slice of house-made baklava. Here in Southern California we don’t consider Mexican food ethnic dining, but eating at can be a culinary journey south of the border. Red vinyl booths, faux wood tables, mellow mariachi, and plenty of papier-mache parrots make Doña Maria an experience and not just a meal out. Think Japanese food and you probably thing sushi. ’s sushi chef’s will greet you with a traditional shout out and make a special roll just for you if you sit at their bar. “Our chef’s are like little magicians,” manager Jennifer Lee noted of their creative flair. Hop over to Pasadena for the spicy treat of Akbar Cuisine of India. The small restaurant fills up fast with both customers and delicious aroma, so be sure to make a reservation and ready your senses.
