Graduation: Tologs Say So Long, But Not Goodbye
Giving the commencement address this year was Assistant Principal Katy Sadler, who's retiring after 38 years at FSHA.
Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy graduated 106 young women at the recent commencement ceremony.
The graduates wore long white gowns and gloves, and carried a bouquet of red roses, as is tradition at the school. Before receiving their diplomas on June 2, the graduates listened to speeches by Salutatorian Lauren Kean (UCLA ’17) and Valedictorian Tara Kawai-Daniels (UCLA ’17).

Touching on the variety of talents of her class, Kean stated, “Among the graduates of 2013 are future scientists, writers, Broadway stars, athletes, artists, philanthropists, CEOs … the list could go on forever.”
Kawai-Daniels also spoke about her fellow graduates as “strong, fierce, independent young women who are not afraid to go after what we want and make a difference” and reflected on the gifts FSHA had bestowed on the students.
“At Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy we were encouraged to be fearless, expand our worldviews, to be who God meant us to be and ‘set the world on fire.’ Instilled in us was the importance of reaching our fullest potential and knowing our self-worth,” she said.

Following these remarks, it was time for the commencement address—this year given by a very special woman in the FSHA community, Assistant Principal Katy Sadler, who is retiring this year after 38 years at the school.
Sadler began as a teacher at FSHA, later introduced the AP program to the curriculum, and directed the (now annual) beloved senior retreat “Kairos.” Sadler’s main message was about the true meaning of FSHA.

“You see, your school is not about the buildings, or the stunningly beautiful environment that surrounds us, or even the remarkably intelligent and kind educators you have encountered. It is much more than that. Just as surely as I speak to you today about all of us being Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, you now become part of this fabric, this legacy that has endured on top of this hill for over 80 years. Now you will be able to say, ‘I am Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy,’” Sadler said.
After the speeches, diplomas were handed out and awards were received. With the sun setting in the distance, the graduates sang the Alma Mater. As the last notes of the song struck, the young women tossed rose petals into the air—another FSHA tradition. And then, the crowd burst into cheers.
