Five Things: The Weekend Edition

From kids and bugs to singing neighbors, there's plenty to do without roaming too far from home this weekend.

1. Green Hatch Chili peppers from New Mexico are only in season for short, special time, and that time is now! teams up with Freida's Specialty Produce to roast those chilis to spicy perfection right in front of your eyes and noses. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, stop by Ralphs, 521 Foothill Blvd., and purchase a 10 pound box or 30 pound sack of the chilis and have them tumble-roasted right then and there. You don't have to tell anyone you didn't roast them yourself.

2. Kids love bugs. Help them love reading by combining bugs and books at the , 1010 Foothill Blvd., Saturday at 11 a.m. The story time is free and open to all, even those who may not be the biggest fan or spiders, beetles, and creeepy crawlies. Stop by the store's website or call for more information, 818-790-0717.

3. Head west Saturday for the 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off at the La Crescenta Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd. From hot and spicyy to rich and meaty, there's a chili to tempt everyone's tastebuds. The contest starts at 1 p.m. with cooking and ends at 3 p.m. with the crowning of the chili king or queen. Come hungry! For more information, see the library's event page or call 818-248-5313.

4. The hills are alive Saturday starting at 8:15 p.m. at , 3901 Dunsmore Ave. The Crescenta Valley Historical Society, Los Angeles County Parks, and the Crescenta Valley Town Council present a free screening of the classic film The Sound of Music accompanied by free popcorn for all. Be sure to bring a picnic, layers, and blankets and chairs. Be prepared to sing.

5. Sunday's concert in brings the light rock grooves of to town. Bring your picnic, blankets, and beach chairs to the park starting at 6 p.m. There's only two more concerts after Sunday night's, so be sure to get out and enjoy the traditional La Cañada summer event while there's still time! Dancing is encouraged but not required.
