Crime Blotter: Catalytic Converters Stolen

Three separate thefts of the pricey auto part are reported.

The following reports were taken from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, Crescenta Valley Station.

Vandalism

A female resident in the 1000 block of Salisbury Court reported that some time  during the night of Saturday, April 30, her car was egged and damage done to its gas tank door.

Catalytic Converter Thefts

Three separate incidents of catalytic converter theft were reported to deputies. Two occurred on Thursday, May 5. A man reported that at approximately 12:30, after returning to his 2002 Toyota Tundra parked in the YMCA’s lot, he started the vehicle, felt it shake, and heard that the engine sounded loud. Checking the truck, he saw that the catalytic converter, valued at $1000, had been sawed off from under the vehicle. Deputies were able to gain information regarding possible suspects through video surveillance footage of the location.

Near the YMCA at Foothill Boulevard just west of Alcorn, a woman reported that some time between 8 a.m. and noon on the same day, two catalytic converters were stolen from her Toyota Sequoia SUV. The woman reported hearing a “horrific noise” upon starting her vehicle and immediately drove to an auto shop where she was informed that the parts were missing from her car.

A day later, on Friday, May 6, the catalytic converter of a 2003 Honda Element was reported stolen. The male victim noted that his son had driven the car to La Cañada High school, 4463 Oak Grove Drive, and parked it in the lot near the batting cages. The son reportedly heard a loud noise when he started the vehicle that afternoon and saw that the converter was missing.

Vehicle Burglary

A male resident in the 1200 block of Journey’s End reported that some time that on the morning of Thursday, May 6 he found the driver’s window of his locked car smashed. Stolen from inside the vehicle was a Magellan GPS device valued at $160.
