Completion of the Ultimate Destination Point Project Has LCF City Council Celebrating

The La Canada Flintridge City Council celebrated the recent completion of the Ultimate Destination Point project Thursday. The celebrations included a PowerPoint presentation on how the project came to be, as well as words from the council and the public.

Liz Blackwelder, a community member that first proposed the project in 2005 and donated $30,000 toward it, was also present.

The project is located at a scenic in the upper slopes of Cherry Canyon and is accessible from the Cerro Negro Trail and the fire road in Cherry Canyon, near the lookout towers. It is used by many hikers and horseback riders from around the Crescenta Valley and beyond.

The council and the public recognized Blackwelder, including Mayor Laura Olhasso, who said Blackwelder is a “wonderful role model for all of us as to making things happen city hall.”

Olhasso went on to recognize others who also partook in the completion of the project, including non-profit agencies, private entities, Los Angeles Regional Parks & Open Spaces District, Southern California Edison and the support of the public and the council.

According to the council, the project, which began in February, consisted of making a trail and providing shaded resting areas for trail users and their dogs and/or horses. Fifteen oaks trees were also added, to which Blackwelder asked that trail users do not tie their horses to the trees because it will cause damage.

The project received $136,000 from grants, donations and city funding. The final cost of the project was around $127,000.

Blackwelder spoke at the celebration and told the council and the attendees to “use it with care and love. I salute the city for believing it could be done, but its up to all of you, the public, to make it a success."
