Burned Sport Chalet Employee Sues Company

Sports Chalet is being sued by one of two employees injured in an explosion at the La Canada Flintridge store on March 1.

Lauren Kaitlyn Polzin and her husband, Neil Polzin, filed the lawsuit Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, naming Sport Chalet Inc. and several other corporate and individual defendants they allege share responsibility for maintaining a swimming pool heater and its natural gas supply at the store.

The couple allege negligence, strict product liability and dangerous condition of public property. Neil Polzin also alleges loss of consortium. A Sports Chalet representative could not be immediately reached for comment on the lawsuit.

At the time of the accident, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Al Yanagisawa said Lauren Polzin and another employee were asked to shut off a gas valve after someone reported smelling gas inside the store.

According to the suit, she ``was severely burned when a flash explosion caused by the swimming pool heater gas leak ... erupted into a blazing fire.''
