is blue inside. The warm wood and high ceiling offset the watery vibe a bit, but there is a bit of an oceanic tone to the interior. Located in Montrose on Honolulu Avenue between Market Sreet. and Ocean View Boulevard., Blue Fish is well-known in the neighborhood and often runs a wait of an hour at peak dinner times. The space is as loud as the greetings when customers walk in the door, but the atmosphere bustles with energy rather than just plain noise.
Blue Fish offers the usual favorites in the sashimi and sushi realms, with a sampling of noodle dishes and salads, including seaweed and cucumber. A seafood tempura combo ($12.95) or shrimp, scallop, and calamari offers a nice alternative for non-raw seafood lovers.
Sushi and sashimi comes in 2 piece or 7 piece options, ranging in price from $4.50 to $17.95, with plates offering different fish and sizes as well. While the typical rolls are on the menu, Blue Fish also offers a selection of “Chef’s Specialty” rolls of creative and delicious combinations. The Descanso Gardens Roll ($12.95), particularly appealing to La Cañada folks, takes the familiar California roll and tops it with diced Ahi tuna and chopped tomato.
There’s mochi for dessert in six flavors, sake, beers, and wine. If it’s a nice day, sit outside, otherwise, grab a seat at the sushi bar and watch the chefs work their magic.
