5 Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 12

Is student financial aid like playing chess? Find out tonight.

1.  The La Cañada-Flintridge Chess Club meets tonight to get their game on.  It doesn't matter if you've only played checkers before or you're working your way up to Fisher status - all are welcome to join the games at the LCF library, 4545 N. Oakwood Ave., from 6:30 to 7:30 pm.  For more information call the library, 818-790-3330, or check the website.

2.  Even if you missed number one back in September, make sure to  get your questions answered about the forms and files needed to complete the FAFSA before it's too late.  Tonight's LCHS Financial Aid Night will be held in the auditorium of the school starting at 7 pm.   The step-by-step process for filling out the Free Application for Federal Aid will be the topic of tonight's event.

3.  Speaking of forms, check in with to learn more about AB 91, a bill sponsored by LCF Assemblyman , that would reduce the amount of paperwork needed to be filed by community college students seeking financial aid.

4. The La Cañada-Flintridge Parks and Recreation Commission meets at 6 pm in Council Chambers of City Hall.   The commission coordinates the recreational needs of the community, including the Music in the Park concert series.  The meeting is open to all. 

5. The city of La Cañada-Flintridge regularly posts rain and debris flow updates on the city website.  These updates include a handy 10-day weather forecast as well as information regarding closures on the Angeles Crest, traffic situations in town, and direction on how to sign up for reverse 9-1-1 calls, obtain sandbags, and monitor debris basins.  Go to the website for more information and to stay informed.
