Magpie's: Excellent Food, Cozy Atmosphere

Magpie's Grill Owner and Executive Chef, Adolfo Mota, takes great pride in his extensive varied menu, according to restaurant reviewer Sue Stauffer.

is a favorite of many La Cañada Flintridge residents.

The comfortable booths, cozy atmosphere, and friendly servers assure every diner that their meal will fulfill expectations. Magpie’s offers a very complete menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner so everyone can find something to meet their individual preferences .

Breakfasts are excellent.

There is the basic breakfast with bacon, ham, or sausage with eggs served with hash brown potatoes and toast of your choice, which is hard to beat. Of course, the omelets are wonderful.  I especially like the chili relleno omelet with an Ortega chili and cheese covered with a delicious red salsa sauce but there are many other combinations from which to choose.

On the extensive main menu, there are some wonderful appetizers including crab cakes served with a sweet honey soy dressing, crispy fried calamari with a tangy cocktail sauce, blackened chicken quesadilla, and an all time favorite-Maui onion rings with ranch dressing and BBQ sauce.

For salads you won’t be disappointed with some of the fabulous creations of chef/owner, Adolfo Mota.

The mango papaya chicken salad is accented with spiced pecans and sweet potato shoestrings dressed with a marvelous honey-mustard. Another favorite is the Greek shrimp salad with feta cheese, Kalamata olives, tomatoes, and cucumber on a bed of crispy lettuce finished with a delightful lemon dressing. Always satisfying is the stuffed avocado salad with bay shrimp or chicken salad.

Magpie’s menu also provides a wide selection of delicious sandwiches. One of the most popular is the sliced roasted tri-tip, jack cheese, and onions served warm on a French roll. Another popular choice is the Reuben corned beef with sauerkraut finished with 1,000 island dressing.

If you like the old fashioned Monte Cristo with ham, turkey, and cheese dipped in egg batter and deep fried, you can order it at Magpie’s. Burgers are especially good and the menu offers some interesting variations. There is also a very nice pasta menu with a seafood linguini served in a Chardonnay wine sauce, Southwest rotelli with grilled chicken, corn and cilantro in a pasilla chili sauce and a lovely three cheese ravioli.

Magpie’s favorites and most popular entrees include an old fashioned hot beef or turkey sandwich piled high on sour dough bread with mashed potatoes and gravy; New York steak; BBQ ribs; grilled shrimp scampi; grilled top sirloin steak; chicken Marsala and old fashioned fried chicken.

The “Surf and Turf” features a top sirloin steak with sautéed shrimp or try the filet mignon with homemade béarnaise sauce; the pork chop schnitzel; or the German bratwurst with warm German potato salad. All the entrees are well prepared and served with house made sauces that are excellent. Entrees are served with choice of soup or salad, potatoes and fresh vegetables.

There is a special menu for children, as Magpie’s welcomes families. There is also a full bar with an amazing selection of fantastic martinis for the connoisseur, as well as a very nice wine list. Magpie’s has convenient parking.
