Bites Nearby: Garden Grill

Treat yourself to a Persian meal in a garden getaway!

On the northwest corner of Ocean View and Foothill Boulevards lies , a restaurant that offers a unique variety of dining experiences. An upscale indoor dining room lends itself to a more formal setting, while outdoor dining is available on the garden terrace. The restaurant lives up to its name, providing a garden retreat with a picturesque flower garden, chirping cockatiel birds and relaxing music.

Garden Grill specializes in high-quality Persian cuisine. Owner Moe Abghary has been in the restaurant business for 35 years and owns several other restaurants in the vicinity. He opened Garden Grill a little over two years ago. The menu's culinary delights come from popular Persian recipes along with some of Abghary's own unique creations. The most popular dishes are the filet mignon shish kabobs and the lamb chops.

I decided to try out the filet mignon shish kabobs for my dinner entree and I found the portions to be enough for two very hungry people. The dinner came complete with heaping portions of rice, vegetables, and tender shish kabob that melted in my mouth.

High-end wines are something Garden Grill prides itself on. Wines from California, Italy and France adorn several shelves at the restaurant, and the staff is more than happy to give you a tour of their selections and educate you on which one goes best with your dish.

The highlight of my meal was looking over the dessert menu in their outdoor Persian lounge. Tucked around the side of the restaurant, the lounge features a bed covered in big comfy pillows that's just an earshot away from bubbling fountains and piped-in classical music. I relaxed and put my feet up to peruse the dessert menu, which features a variety of ice creams and a triple mousse.

But then I saw something new: sonati, a rosewater saffron gelato with pistachios. Feeling a little crazy and daring all at once, I ordered it. It is very different from traditional super-sweet desserts I have grown accustomed to. It has a soft flavor of licorice with a hint of rose. The pistachios added a nice accent flavor that completed the entire dessert. I found this to be one of the most relaxing places I have ever eaten a dessert this close to home.

Just as I was getting ready to leave, I was offered a cup of hot mint tea which proved to be the ideal ending to my whole dining experience. It was just a simple tea made from fresh mint leaves and boiling water, but it left a refreshing taste in my mouth, especially after eating all of the garlic and onions that seasoned my filet mignon shish kabobs.
