Autism Awareness Event at Descanso Gardens to Benefit La Crescenta School

The Elliott Institute, a school that services children with moderate to severe autism, tops off Autism Awareness Month with a fundraiser for the school.

The Elliott Institute is hosting its first fundraiser at Descanso Gardens on April 28.

The school invited approximately 12 artists to set up outdoor galleries in the Harvest Garden, with a portion of the proceeds going to help the Foothill Boulevard school, which serves children with moderate to severe autism, said event chairwoman Mary McGinnis.

Harvest Garden exists to motivate special needs students to make healthy choices, she said.

"By using the garden as a metaphor for life, students learn to better care for themselves and their environment, as they see how nurturing or neglect affects living things,'' added McGinnis, whose child is a student at the Institute.

In addition to featuring a gallery of works from professional artists, the event will showcase the work of 24 students from the Institute.

The Elliott Institute, which was established in 1992 by Dr. Alicia Elliott, and the late Leslie Watkins, is committed to providing consistency and dedication for the most severely involved and underserved youngsters with this disorder.

The event will take place Sunday, April 28th, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Harvest Garden at Descanso Gardens.
