Blog: What You Need to Know Before Your Child Enters High School

A unique event for parents of 7th and 8th grade students to help chart the course for high school and college!

The La Canada Flintridge Educational Foundation is pleased to present “High School and Beyond: Charting the Course” on Thursday, February 21st at 7 p.m. at La Canada High School Auditorium.

This LCFEF-sponsored panel discussion and Q&A is open to the public, but designed primarily for parents of 7th and 8th graders. The purpose of the evening is to help parents understand what needs to be known before students enter high school.

When do students enroll? What courses should they take?  Do they need to take summer school? How do high school athletics work? What are colleges looking for?  The panelists will include Jim Cartnal – La Canada High School Assistant Principal, Sally Spangler – La Canada High School College Counselor, Alison Dalbeck and Shannon Brasscia – 7/8 Counselors, Mark Rasic - Senior Associate Director of Undergraduate Admission at the University of Southern California, and Jinny Dalbek – LCFEF Summer School Chair.

The panel will also include three high school students with diverse backgrounds.  Also on hand will be a 529 Plan expert available from Merrill Edge to talk about saving for post-secondary education.  Merrill Edge and Bank of America are sponsoring this event.

The Flintridge Bookstore will be on hand as well offering a variety of books related to education and college preparation.  A $100 gift certificate for Flintridge Books will be raffled off as a door prize.  The night will begin with a panel discussion and then include a question and answer segment.  All the panelists will then be available for individual questions.  “We are pleased to provide these kinds of informative events to our school familes” says LCFEF Board member and event organizer Brent Kuszyk.
