Funded in part by the James Irvine Foundation and the World Festival of Sacred Music. Presenting partner: Glendale Arts.

Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre (www.heididuckler.org) (HDDT) will perform “Expulsion” on October 15 and 16, 2011 in a vacant lot in Glendale, Calif. “Expulsion” is a thought-provoking dance work based on the themes of the temporary, often fragile nature of home, and the universal experience of being forced to leave it.

Four male dancers from HDDT will collaborate with five female dancers from the Iranian-Armenian Djanbazian Dance Company to initiate an open dialogue about the impact these issues have on individuals, families, and neighborhoods. The performance space will consist of a series of three-story scaffolding designed by architect Alex Ward. The audience will view the dance from all angles around the scaffolding, providing each viewer with a unique and unusual perspective. A guitarist, drummer, and glockenspiel percussionist will accompany the dancers with Alex Noice’s original score.

“Expulsion” premiered in greater LA’s Cambodia Town in March 2010, and featured dancers from the Khmer Arts Academy. It is a purposefully flexible piece, with the ability to adapt to almost any city or cultural group while retaining its unique and impactful experience. HDDT plans to bring “Expulsion” to LA’s Chinatown and Koreatown in 2012, collaborating with dance companies and artists from those communities as well. To actively engage new audiences, HDDT will host open rehearsals and its Curbside Conversations program, which will bring together cultural, political, and neighborhood leaders in a post-performance curated conversation.
