Descanso Bonsai Society to Host 44th Annual Bonsai Show This Weekend

Descanso Bonsai Society will present their 44th Annual Bonsai Show from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 14th and 15th in Van De Camp Hall and adjoining classrooms, at Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge, CA.

Descanso Gardens are located at 1418 Descanso Blvd., La Canada Flintridge, Ca., (818) 952-4400.

Descanso Bonsai Society’s show is one of the longest running and biggest shows in Southern California.  It is also Southern California’s largest judged Bonsai Show.

The show is free with admission to the gardens. The show features trees on display from novice, intermediate and master levels in the art of bonsai.  The show also includes a sales area that will have finished bonsai, bonsai stock, pots, bonsai related items and an extensive selection of bonsai related books for sale.

Descanso Bonsai Society Club members will also be holding demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. While answering audience questions, club members will show how they replant, wire, and work on their trees.

Bonsai, pronounced “bone-sigh”, literally means plant in pot.  It is the ancient Japanese art and science of the cultivation of miniature trees through a traditional process of using horticultural and aesthetic principles.  The desired styling is accomplished by a combination of pruning the foliage, wiring the branches to the desired shape, and confining the roots in a container.  Bonsai expresses a maximum of poetic feeling in a minimum of space.  Each bonsai contains the essence of a thought about the beauty of nature.
