Five Things You Need to Know Today: June 22

A summer solstice hike offers city and sunset views.

1.) The invites kids of all ages to make art at the community room today from 1 to 3 p.m. The multi-cultural art projects are part of the activities celebrating the library’s 40th International Children’s Art Exhibition. For more information, call the library at 818-790-3330.

2.) Take note of the summer solstice by using the longest day of the year for an evening hike at Deukmejian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Rd., La Crescenta. The guided hike starts at 7 p.m. and meets at the historic La Mesnager barn at the trailhead. The park covers 709 acres of the San Gabriel foothills and offers awesome views of the Los Angeles basin. Be sure to bring a flashlight, water, and warm clothing for post-sunset chilliness.

3.) Registration is underway for the ’s Camp Runamuk. Running Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the day camp for kids aged 5 to 8 provides games, sports, crafts, cooking, and most importantly, fun. The six sessions each last a week and run through August 5. More information and registration instructions can be found on the center’s website.

4.) The trial of Marcos Costa, charged with two counts of murder, vehicular manslaughter, and felony reckless driving from the April 2009 La Cañada crash of the truck he was driving down the Angeles Crest Highway, has gotten underway this week at the Los Angeles Superior Court in Pasadena. is in the courtroom and will continuously update as the story progresses. Jury selection resumes Thursday at 11 a.m.

5.) Maybe you missed the yesterday or are inspired to sponsor a drive yourself? The Red Cross always needs drive hosts, and will walk you through the entire process from idea to completion. According to the Red Cross, 38,000 blood donations are needed every day; every 2 seconds someone in the US needs blood. Stop by the Red Cross website for more information on how to get started organizing your drive or  to find a blood drive where you can stop by, give blood  and save a life.
