5 Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 19

A new superintendent has been named and orientation is offered for Kindergarten parents.

1. Jody Scott, Account Executive at , will be the featured speaker at the of La Cañada's lunchtime meeting, 11:50 am to 1:30 pm at Van de Kamp Hall, , 1418 Descanso Drive.  Check out the club's website or just stop by for more information.   The Kiwanis motto of "we build" encourages participation in and service to the community.

2. La Cañada's Public Works and Safety Commission meets at city hall in council chambers tonight.  The 6 pm meeting is open to all members of the community who are interested in the maintenance and safety of the city's roads, public ways, parks, and sidewalks.  is located at 1327 Foothill Blvd.  For more information call 818-790-8882.

3. Incoming Kindergarten Parent Orientation is offered tonight for parents of all Kindergarteners entering La Cañada's public schools.  Held at Paradise Canyon Elementary, 417 Knight Way, the session begins at 7:30 pm.  For more information contact the school at 818-952-8340.

4. Gun control and gun laws are dominating news headlines these days.  La Cañada's state assembly representative, Anthony Portantino, has introduced AB 144.  The bill would prohibit the carrying of unloaded firearms in public by private citizens.  Learn more by reading .

5.  As reported by , Wendy Sinnette, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for the La Cañada Unified School District, will take over as schools superintendent upon the departure of Jim Stratton this August.   With a background in teaching and a strong relationship with the community, many feel Sinnette is the perfect choice.  Learn more by reading .
