Trio Receives Troop 507 Eagle Scout Honors

LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE, Calif. – Kyle Thomas, Jamie Walker and Samuel Weinberger, all members of Troop 507, have earned the highest advancement award from the Boy Scouts of America, the Eagle Scout Award.

Each had to earn a total of 21 merit badges and show leadership by planning, developing and completing a community service project.

Kyle, son of Ernie and Tracy Thomas, rebuilt a garden at Crestview Preparatory Elementary School for his Eagle project. Fifteen adults and 36 scouts assisted on the project during a 102-degree day, converting an overgrown patch of ground, elevating the surface by two feet using railroad ties as a border, and building a new fence and gate. The garden will be used in Crestview’s science program.

Kyle has been in Troop 507 for seven years, and has held several leadership positions, including Den Chief, Patrol Leader and Historian. He will graduate from La Canada High in June in the top 2 percent of his class.

Jamie, son of Nancy Walker and Steven Huff, led a crew of volunteers in clearing the trail area just north of Armstrong’s Nurseries in La Canada. They widened the path and built a fence, using proceeds from a fundraiser at Dona Maria Restaurant to help pay for the cost of materials. The project was completed with the help of 51 volunteers and took a total of 215 man hours.

Jamie attends Flintridge Preparatory School, where he will graduate in June. He is very involved in the school’s water polo program, which has gone from having lost every game during his freshman years to finishing in the CIF Top 10 the past three years.

He joined Troop 507 in 2007 and has held several leadership positions, including Instructor, Historian and Patrol Leader. An important part of Jamie’s life has been Catalina Island; he has been sailing to the Isthmus at Catalina since he was 3 months old and has his name and birthdate engraved on a brick path at Avalon.

Samuel, son of Michael Weinberger and Kathleen Kovalcik, led a restoration of the trailhead at the Loma Alta County Park in Altadena for his Eagle project. The area had become badly eroded from frequent hiking over the years. With the help of 41 other scouts, Sam cleared rocks and place 200 feet of post and rail fencing.

Samuel is a member of the National Honor Society, the California Scholarship Federation, and the Mu Alpha Theta mathematical honor society. He is currently a junior at La Canada High School.

Samuel joined Troop 507 in 2008 and has held a variety of leadership positions, including Troop Reporter, Troop Guide, Den Chief, Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. He is a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow.
