Tanzanite takes the spotlight at Pasadena Lapidary’s February meeting

The February 18, 2014 general meeting of the Pasadena Lapidary Society (PLS) will feature a presentation on Tanzanite by member Briana Casay.  Named by Tiffany & Co. after the country in which it was discovered, Tanzania, this mineral was first found in 1967 in the Mererani Hills near Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Prized for its ability to appear different colors at different angles, in different light – hues can vary from violet to sapphire blue, to burgundy.  A truly gorgeous gemstone, Tanzanite is a variety of a calcium aluminum hydroxy silicate.

With our annual gem and mineral show just around the corner in March, PLS President Marcia Goetz will lead instruction on assembling a display case liner as the other feature of our February meeting.  Here’s your chance to learn how to enhance a display case containing your prize mineral specimens or lapidary creations by constructing a proper liner.

The meeting is free and open to the public and will be at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, in the Donald Wright Auditorium wing of the Pasadena Central Library at 285 E. Walnut Street, Pasadena 91101.
