The La Cañada Valley Sun collected two first-place and three second-place awards Saturday in the California Newspaper Publishers Assn.'s annual Better Newspaper Contest.
Welcome to another installment of Reader's Choice: where you decide the business who's best at the week's topic. This week: Hair salons.
You don't have to venture too far around town to find an array of hair salons. Any number of these businesses will pamper their patrons and, if the customers have chosen wisely, receive a nice head massage mid-shampoo. But with 16 in town, how do you choose? Which do you choose and why? Which hair salon do you believe to be the best in La Cañada? Vote in the poll below and please leave a comment about why you chose it. The voting will continue through 9 a.m. on May 15, at which time the votes will be tallied and a winner named. If there is a tie, the winner will be determined by most favorable comments left on the story. If the poll is gamed, as was the best pizza poll, we will use positive reviews left on the business' directory listing…
The previous owner retired. The station is completing improvements and could open by the end of May. No exact date is available.
The abandoned Foothill Boulevard 76 Station is set to reopen, possibly this month, according to La Canada Flintridge city officials. The owner retired, leaving the 76 Station at 2384 Foothill Blvd. in La Canada Flintridge, La Canada Flintridge City Manager Mark Alexander told Patch. "I don't want to speculate as to the reasons why the 76 station closed but I do know that the previous owner retired," Alexander said. "The new station operator is hoping to reopen the station this month and is nearing completion of their improvements." However, Alexander does not know the target grand opening date. LCF Patch editor Donna Evans contributed to this story.

Crews and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department don't know what caused the 76 Station owner to close the station.
Local drivers may have noticed the caution tape surrounding the 76 Station at 2384 Foothill Blvd. in La Canada Flintridge, near the border of Montrose-La Crescenta. "As far as we know, we have no idea why it closed," said Sheriff's Sgt. Brett Hanson of the Crescenta Valley Station. Patch checked with Conoco Phillips customer service representatives but no information about why the station closed is immediately available. Check back with Patch for more updates about why the gas station is closed. What do you know about the closed gas station? Has this presented a problem for you when you need to fill up?

Complaint made by ex-business partner approved for trial by L.A. Superior Court judge.
A woman who alleges a former shareholder of her company stole her idea for decorative cupcake sleeves can move forward with her complaint, a judge tentatively ruled today. The suit was filed in March 2011 in Los Angeles Superior Court by Sheri Mersola and her company, Moon Cherie, against Theresa Deliberto, manager of La Canada Flintridge-based Cupcake LLC. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ramona See said she is inclined to allow Mersola to take her case to trial on six of the eight causes of action, including fraud, misappropriation of trade secrets and breach of contract. See said she will likely dismiss the allegations of deceit and unfair competition. However, the judge said she wanted to mull the issues further and took the case …

Tony at On The Edge is the only one I trust with my hair, and I've been going to him for years. All the Ragus women (myself, my mom, my cousin, my aunt) go to On The Edge and we ALL get frequent compliments on our cuts. Tony also specializes in cutting curly hair. Hans is OK for beauty supplies, but they messed up my eyebrows and way overcharge for bang cuts ($15? I think not).   more ›
