The Los Angeles theatrical group, the California Shakespeare Ensemble, focuses on the words and the characters, not costumes and 'artificial inflection.'
A new Shakespeare ensemble will debut at Descanso Gardens on April 21 with a performance of Twelfth Night. Three working actors had an idea one evening over dinner: what if they got the best Shakespearean actors they knew, then stripped their favorite plays down to only the words and the people? No fairy costumes. No artificial inflection. Just a dogged determination to tell the story at hand. By the end of dinner, the California Shakespeare Ensemble was born. The ensemble is based on the idea of a supergroup; it is a side project for currently working actors, and an incubator for up-and-coming actors. Some in the ensemble are the stars of hit TV shows (Ken Baumann on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, David Blue from Stargate: …

The trio of entrepreneurs mixed art and business to create [SIC] Apparel in a garage in La Cañada.
To three La Cañada High School graduates, fresh out of college, T-shirts are a vehicle for exhibiting art, and paying respect to the artist. And now, the trio's business, [SIC] Apparel, is soliciting start-up capital to the tune of $18,000. Amount raised as of Thursday morning: $5,284, according to [SIC] Apparel's Kickstarter campaign page. Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. [SIC] Apparel is the brainchild of Francis Pollara, Anya Rosen and Walter Mansilla, who graduated from La Cañada High in 2007. The entrepreneurs work out of the garage of Rosen's childhood home, where they've set up a radial screen printing press that can produce from 100 to 300 shirts an hour. Who Does What? From photography to ceramics and portraits made from candy, La Cañada High Students exhibited a range of artistic talents in Thursday night's show.
On March 1, 2012, La Cañada High School opened its doors to celebrate Fine Arts month with an annual art show displaying works of art from students in Beginning and Advanced Ceramics, Art Foundation, Advanced Art I and II, Independent Study, Art Portfolio and ROP Photography. I met with three of the teachers that motivate and inspire the students to create masterpieces. Photography teacher, Gayle Nicholls-Ali has been a teacher at LCHS since 2007. She excitedly introduced me to a new student, Michal Hron, from the Czech Republic. He is here for one year as an exchange student. “I’ve never had an exchange student in my class,” said Nicholls-Ali. Hron never took a photography class until he came to La Cañada. “Michael won an honorable …

A recent performing arts event at Flintridge Prep featured the school's clown troupe, Nose Goes.
When the noses are on, the talking stops. With that guiding principle, students in the Flintridge Preparatory School Clown Troupe, Nose Goes, created characters whose face paint ran the gamut: happy, angry, forlorn. No two were alike, said Flintridge Prep communications director Nicole Trevor. The second annual event, Clown Broadcasting Service Presents Now You Nose, was held Saturday. This year's challenge: Put the clowns into situations where they have to explain how to do something basic, Trevor said. But as soon as they put on their noses, they’re not allowed to talk, so they communicate by pantomiming and using props. Under the direction of Lisa Bierman, a Prep alumna and member of the school's performing arts faculty, students acted…
