Video Gallery: Flintridge Prep Grads Poised for Next Step

graduating seniors, their parents and friends filled the terrace and patio in front of Pasadena Civic Auditorium on Sunday evening after some 125 students received their high school diplomas. 

Patch spoke with five students in the Class of 2011 about their Prep experiences and future plans. We also caught a former student who has returned to teach at Prep.  The video interviews are posted above, but here are some ticklers:

• Abbey Deckop, Ohio State University: Abbey was active in student government and played sports. Her experience at Flintridge has been “amazing, and I’m grateful to everyone who’s helped me along the way.”
• Alex Wood, Johns Hopkins: Alex is a recipient of a National Merit Letter of Commendation. He’s been at Flintridge since seventh grade and played on the tennis the entire six years.
• Kenyatta Smith, Harvard University: For his skill in basketball and volleyball, Kenyatta received the Upper School Athlete of the Year award.  He took on many leadership roles during his six years at Prep and participated in community service.
• Nikki Kim, UC Davis: Nikki started Prep in seventh grade and is secretary of the Class of 2011. She says she’s leaning toward a pre-law major, but “You never know what might happen.”
• Raquel Olvera, Boston College: Raquel started Flintridge in ninth grade and took enough Advanced Placement classes to qualify for advanced standing at Boston College. She says Prep has made her a better person. That’s her dad mugging with her in the video.
• Peter Chesney, Vassar ‘08: Peter is a 2004 Flintridge Prep graduate.  He earned his bachelor’s degree at Vassar and teaches history to seventh- and ninth-graders at Prep.
