LCHS Shines at Solar Cup

, a veteran solar cup team, won top honors for the Hottest Looking Boat at the nation’s largest solar-powered boat competition during Metropolitan Water District’s 10th annual Solar Cup™ race, the Foothill Municipal Water District has announced. 

Students from 39 high schools throughout Southern California, during a seven-month program, participated in building, equipping and racing 16-foot, single-seat canoes powered only by the sun.

A technical advisory team from a few local colleges completed a series of qualifying events by ensuring boats were both seaworthy and safe. The teams underwent two, 90-minute, 1.4 kilometer endurance races.

The Foothill Municipal Water District and La Canada Irrigation District sponsored LCHS' team.

“We are proud of the accomplishments of the students at La Canada High School for winning the Hottest Looking Boat award for two years running. This is a great way for students to learn about engineering and solar power while learning about water resources,” said FMWD General Manager Nina Jazmadarian.

The event was held May 18-20. 

FMWD provides imported water to Crescenta Valley Water District, La Cañada Irrigation District, Mesa Crest Water Company, Valley Water Company, Lincoln Avenue Water Company, Las Flores Water Company and Rubio Cañon Land & Water Association.  Kinneloa Irrigation District, another retail agency, takes no water from Foothill.
