Great Escape to the Getty

Less than a half an hour drive from La Cañada, the amazing Paul J. Getty museum beckons!

Though its only existed since 1997, the Paul J. Getty Museum is already a major cultural institution in Los Angeles. The $1.3 billion center houses works of Vincent Van Gogh, Hyacinth Rigaud, Paul Gauguin, Pontormo and other prominent artists line the walls of the different rooms.

La Cañadans are in luck, because the Getty is a short, 25 minute drive away. Enjoy a leisurely drive to this fascinating museum, and then the scenic tram ride up the hill where the Getty awaits. Now, if ever, is the time to go, with A Revolutionary Project: Cuba from Walker Evans to Now on exhibit through October 2.

A Revolutionary Project chronicles photographers and photojournalists work from 1933 pre-Revolutionary Cuba to present-day Cuba. The large gallery spans time and location, with images ranging from Oriente's burning sugar cane fields to the dilapidated streets of Havana, Che Guevara and Fidel Castro to Cuban national hero José Martí, and so much more.

Other current exhibits include Paris: Life and Luxury (running through August 7) and In Search of Biblical Lands: From Jerusalem to Jordan in 19th Century Photography (running through September 12).

Don't leave without walking through Robert Irwin's central garden. Enjoy the trickling stream, lush foilage, and shady sycamore trees, all surrounded by expansive grass that is perfect for an afternoon picnic. Wander along the travertine pathways high atop Los Angeles and enjoy stunning (albeit windy) views of the city. And don't forget to visit the gift shop, where myriad books, cds, dvds, jewelry, totes, bookmarks and magnets await you.
