Updated: Blumenfeld Ousts Incumbent, Uncertified Results Show
Challenger Andrew Blumenfeld pulled ahead of incumbent Jeanne Broberg by 10 votes, the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder posted Friday.
Updated: A spokeswoman for the County Registrar-Recorder's office said Friday's vote count - which showed Blumenfeld lept past Broberg by 10 votes - will be the count that is certified Monday.
"The results [updated] online today are the last results, which will be certified,'' said spokeswoman Marcia Ventura.
Earlier: In the rollercoaster race for the remaining seat on La Cañada Unified School District's governing board, challenger Andrew Blumenfeld has pulled ahead of incumbent Jeanne Broberg by 10 votes.
Broberg enjoyed a mere two-vote edge over Blumenfeld going into Friday's 1 p.m. count, but the latest tally, as reported by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder, shows Blumenfeld with 1,835 votes and Broberg with 1,825 votes.
"I am thrilled. I think if this is a final tally, and I get the opportunity to serve La Cañada, it’s going to be an exciting time,'' Blumenfeld said Friday.
The election will not be certified until Monday, so there is a chance that additional ballots could find their way into the tally, though it was Blumenfeld's understanding from county officials that Friday's was the final tally.
A spokeswoman at the Registrar-Recorder's office told Patch that she could not say whether Friday's tally was the final vote count. She was awaiting a report and said she would call back with an answer.
"I'm really proud of the message we've been putting out there since last summer: that we expect more from our board, we expect a more proactive board, and one that is an obvious, vocal and aggressive advocate on behalf of students and their families,'' he said.
Outgoing school board member Cindy Wilcox, who supported Blumenfeld's campaign, said Friday that she is thrilled to be replaced by Blumenfeld.
"He is the perfect person to fill that seat,'' said Wilcox, who drove to Norwalk for Friday's final tally.
Still, Blumenfeld remained cautious.
"It's not over until it's over,'' he added.
A message left at Broberg's home was not immediately returned Friday.
Results will be certified Monday.
Unofficial election results show candidate Ellen Multari won her seat Nov. 8. Friday's total showed she earned the seat with 31.23 percent of the vote, or 2,109 votes. Blumenfeld captured 27.17 percent of the vote, with Broberg trailing at 27.03 percent. Fourth-place finisher Ernest Koeppen won 984 votes, or 14.57 percent of the vote.
If the results stand, Blumenfeld, a junior at Princeton University and 2009 graduate of La Cañada High School will be the youngest-ever member of the LCUSD governing board in its history, the La Cañada Valley Sun has reported. Blumenfeld, who raised more money for the election campaign than the other three candidates, is poised to have ousted veteran school board member Broberg, who has served the district for three terms.
The Registrar Recorder is expected to certify the election Monday morning.
